About Loop Cowboy
Loop Cowboy is the alter ego of Ben Watling, a British musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist based in Zermatt, Switzerland.
Ben has performed across the US, Canada, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Iceland, the UK and Europe, both with his own live looping show and as part of other musical projects. In the Alps, he has held residencies at some of the best-known après-ski venues, building a reputation for performances that are skilful, warm, playful and never quite the same twice.
The first version of Loop Cowboy began back in 2012, with a guitar, a loop pedal, beatboxing, and a trombone. Ben would build the music piece by piece in front of an audience, layering sounds live.
The cowboy part came later.
After a solo trip along Route 66, driving a Mustang through the American desert, met real cowboys along the way, and came home with a hat that was more than a souvenir. The cowboy became a symbol of independence, adventure and doing things differently. A lone ranger musician, following his own sound rather than fitting neatly into one genre.
Today, Loop Cowboy brings together years of experience across classical music, jazz, funk, house, soul, country and dance music. Using vocals, guitar, bass, keys, trumpet, trombone and live looping, he plays, samples and layers every part himself, creating a performance with the warmth of live music and the flow of a DJ set.
The show can shift with the room, from laid-back sunset sets to après-ski chaos, private parties, weddings, luxury dance floors and festival stages. On some special days, Loop Cowboy is joined by guest musicians on saxophone, percussion or vocals, but he remains at the centre of it all, building and shaping the sound as it happens.
Loop Cowboy is the mad prospector of sound, digging through genres, instruments and influences to create something familiar, fresh and completely his own.
